VoIP on the N96
There was some concern when it was first announced that the N96 would not have the SIP client that allowed VoIP direct from the handset.
Nokia said this would not matter because there were other third party applications available that would handle this, and so there are.
It would seem however that Nokia were concerned enough about the criticism to try and resolve it annd have announced their own application to allow settings to be changed directly on the N96. You can read about it here: http://conversations.nokia.com/home/2008/12/nokia-blew-it-big-time-with-voip.html
To be honest it does not seem something that our forum users have found to be a problem, but if this is useful to you, report your feedback and let Nokia know via the pages of Planet N96!

Nokia say they’ve actually got an imroved SIP client on the N96. Even better than that on the N95 8 GB. Fat lot of good that does for anyone. What exactly are you going to do with a new and improved SIP stack if you don’t have a CLIENT to use it?!!! It’s like having all the Internet settings on your PC without any browser.
Older phones (N95, N95 8 GB) and newer phones (N79, N85) have the VoIP client, but the N96 doesn’t. Don’t tell me about Fring and Gizmo. They have a lot of faff and are nowhere near as well integrated with the Nokia interface as the native Nokia VoIP client.
If Nokia aren’t going make native VoIP functionality (”Internet Call”) available via download or firmware update soon, my N96 is going to eBay and I’m switching to iPhone. What a let down by Nokia!

Hear Hear! — well at least I want the VoIP client back. (although the N96 is still a good phone)..

The VoIP client was a big part of my loyalty to Nokia phones in the first place. I am so irritated that I spent so much money on this phone and lost VoIP functionality. Shame on me for not checking into if first. Agreed the fring and Gizmo are pretty much useless as the integration is poor. I’m using Octrotalk right now which allows the programming of one sip client. It works ok but not what I wanted. The Nokia client allowed me to register with several sip providers at once.
Apparently Nokia doesn’t see this feature as much of a selling point.

This is really stupid I left the N80 because of lacking the SIP (and client). I just bought N96 and I now se it is missing the SIP client. Fring on the N80 was no solution for me. My next phone is iPhone.

On the N80 you could potentially install the “internet edition” firmware — this provides “proper” voip support.
The N95 8Gb was the best of the bunch. It’s relatively fast, responsive. battery life is decent. I loved that phone.
Then I made the BIG MISTAKE of getting an N96. Read http://cherrybyte.blogspot.com/2009/03/nokia-n96-continues-to-disappoint.html . As far as I’m concerned Nokia let us all down. Indeed to the extent it’s time to find another home. Android (early days, nice idea), iPhone (closed, camera, video), Palm Pre (new) I’m really really not sure….
